No NameNo Name

The Beginning

NO NAME was founded in Dudelange, Luxembourg in 1988.
Why NO NAME?
When the time came, they were asked to play their second gig, they didn't have a name. After all suggestions were rejected the band still had no name!
So the band was called NO NAME for their first public appearance at the Hild in Dudelange in December 1988 which saw their first two own titles performed on stage: Battlefield and Thunderstorm.
It happened that on the bill of their second gig, a charity festival against starvation in Armenia, former republic of the Soviet Union, they were referred to as "NO NAME Band vun Diddeleng" (NO NAME Band from Dudelange).
Later when the band had made themselves a name in Luxembourg, despite the fact of having none, it was not advisable to change the name anymore.
This early line up consisted of Patrick Kiefer, vocals; Alex Rukavina, keys; Claude Groben & Yves diProspero, guitars; Dan Pieknik, bass; Chris Sonntag, drums.
Early 1990, Yves had to quit due to his commitments in school.
Whereas during the first two years the band mostly played cover songs, they recorded a first tape in 1990, the now infamous "5 Track Demo Tape" containing 5 of their own songs (a.o. an early version of Septagone). They already showed the musical influences of that period: MARILLION, PENDRAGON, IQ, TWELFTH NIGHT…and like Marillion fought their “Genesis-copy”-image, NO NAMEs desperate fight against their critics comparing them to Marillion started.
Late 1990 guitar player Gilles Zeimet joined the band.
The following year NO NAME did 2nd place in the first “Looking For the Best” contest in the Kulturfabrik in Esch/Alzette. Held every year since then new or little known bands from the region get an opportunity to test their skills. That 2nd place led to the recording of the "Heap of Ruins" tape, followed by an extensive tour through the cafés (pubs) of Luxembourg and even some gigs in France.

The Early Days

1993 saw the release of their first CD “Zodiac”, distributed by MSI. Included was a song in luxembourgish, the mother-tongue of the band “Mat enger Trein”. Again they toured the festivals & pubs of Luxembourg. The Track "Cries from the Mire" is featured on the "Greenpeace Luxembourg" sampler of the same year.
On July 10th 1994 NO NAME plays on the "Rock um Knuedler", the biggest free rock festival in Luxembourg held each year. "Mat Enger Tréin" and the full band version of "De Verstand" appear on the subsequent sampler.
In 1995 “The Secret Garden”, the second album was recorded in only 9 days. NO NAME signed a worldwide distribution deal with MUSEA / Angular Records.
Bass player Dan Pieknik left NO NAME after the recording sessions. He was replaced by Gilles Loes, who in the past had been sitting in on various occasions and performed well on two tracks of The Secret Garden. This album also shows a special guest appearance by Yves diProspero on classical guitar on 2 tracks. Yves comes back into the band in March 1996.
The private lives of the band went through a period of confusion in the first part of 1996 and after 3 years climbing up from the unknown to the power play on national radio-stations the creative pause was well deserved.

The Progressive Era

In September 1996, NO NAME finally got their act together, decided to take a break from the stage and began working on the songs for “The Other Side”.
That time Gilles Zeimet chose to go separate ways.
Recordings for the third album "The Other Side" are starting in April 1998 and are finished in September that same year.
In July 99 NO NAME makes a second appearance at Luxembourg’s biggest Open Air Event "Rock um Knuedler”. This time to support GOLDEN EARRING.
The 4th of December NO NAME is headlining the first PROG-PARADE in the former German capital Bonn.
Early 2000 Bass player Gilles Loes left the band. He was joining the band LOW DENSITY CORPORATION who has won the first Emergenza Contest for Luxembourg and which is a totally different music style than he did before.
NO NAME at that time continuous as a four member band.
In June singer Kuffi was asked to participate with the band T42 on the “Fête de la musique”. Another invited person was former Marillion front-man FISH.Together they performed the song “The Company”.
The band decided to ask Christian’s sister Iris, who was a guest musician on the flute on several concerts (as in Germany, Hungary and Holland), to join NO NAME as bass player.
She made her first appearance on stage in May 2001 when NO NAME was Special Guest of the FISH Concert in Luxembourg city's "den Atelier".
That night the band performed a 17 min. epic called “Once around me” which became later in 2003 “A recollection of dreams”.
Late summer 2001 NO NAME are back in the studio to record the song “Hämmelsmarch”, a traditional luxembourgish song, for the RTL Sampler Planet Luxembourg.
With that track NO NAME got an invitation to the famous “Schouberfouer” were they played two times “Hämmelsmarch” in presence of 500 invited persons, such as the mayor of Luxembourg and some government officials..
After that the band took a long break because of family affairs. But they didn’t stop. In 2003 NO NAME was concentrated to work only on new material without playing any gig.
The 15th anniversary concert (December 2003) at Café Intro in Dudelange. Musical fireworks.

The Comeback!

7 years after “The Other Side”, No Name released their fourth album, obviously called “4”. “4” was definitely No Name's most progressive and melodic album until then. This album includes 6 new Songs. One of them is the one called “A recollection of dreams” written earlier that time. After being re-arranged quite a few times until it reached it’s final version, it became a 17 min epic track which reads the past of the Band.

After a few gigs and a great release party, with MARILLION´s former singer FISH, at Luxembourg´s famous venue the “ROCKHAL the band took a short break because of family affairs. But they never stopped working progressive for the band.

“20 Candles”

Christian’s sister Iris, who played the bass for the band so far decided to left the band because of private situations. After Iris' leaving Marc Muller joined the band.

After long discussions NO NAME decided to do something crazy, never done before. A "Best of"compilation. This was a carefully planned project from a band celebrating 20 years of playing prog together in their best way. The idea was to re-record old material (12 songs) that was no longer available, but also to include new material (2 songs, “Uncompromising” and “First Night”).

They were recording this Album at the Tritione Studios in Trier and invited 2 guest-musicians. Fred Hormain played Saxophone on “Broken Heart” and Jonathan Tilly did some bagpipes on “Battlefield”. They decided to name the new record “20 candles”. It was the perfect time to celebrate their 20 years-existing.

After the recording sessions they were looking forward to release their “20 candles” Album for a huge 20th anniversary concert on March 14th 2009 in Dudelange.

The whole gig was a great success an NO NAME did a very good job that night with a brilliant 2 Set-concert including a break of 15 minutes. It was a very special night and a great experience for the whole band an motivated them to continue their job as the "NO NAME Band vun Diddeleng" ;););););)

At the moment they are working on new material...this could be very very progressive stuff.
